Overview

Trefignath is a long cairn that was built in three phases. The earliest would appear to have been constructed in 3,000 BC, judging by the tool and pottery finds on the site; the remaining chambers being added over a period of centuries. This First Phase of the construction is a very simple affair, consisting of a box of large and flat slabs, over which was stacked a mound of the roughly hewn stones that now surround the cairn. The Second Phase chamber has since collapsed and its enormous capstone lies broken, but is distinguished from the first chamber by a forecourt in the entrance, formed from two stones, one of which still stands. The Third Phase of the cairn has survived intact and so is the most striking of the three; it also has a forecourt inside of the two tall members forming the entrance. It is believed that the mound of stones laid over the first chamber would have been extended cover all three, though leaving the entrance to the Third Phase chamber exposed.
