Private Arthur Lamb

Private Arthur "Tut" Lamb, of No.13 Platoon, "B" Company, 2nd Battalion The South Staffordshire Regiment. He took part in the invasion of Sicily in July 1943 (it was presumably around this time that the above photograph was taken), however like so many others his Waco glider landed in the sea and he spent 11 hours, occasionally under fire, clinging to the wreckage before being rescued. At Arnhem, Lamb was knocked unconscious by a mortar explosion during fighting in a built-up area, time and place unknown, but having been taken in by some civilians, he recovered and rejoined the Battalion. Having fought throughout the battle at Oosterbeek, Lamb successfully swam the Rhine when the 1st Airborne Division withdrew on the 25/26th September. In May 1945, he accompanied the Division to Norway to oversee the German surrender. Arthur Lamb died in 1982, aged 61. Copyright: Keith Lamb.
