The group moved off in the direction of Arnhem and quickly encountered a pair of Germans, one of whom was wounded in an exchange of fire. Having dressed his wounds they left him behind, but the other man, of the Dutch SS, was taken prisoner. After some days of making their way south, avoiding German patrols and obtaining rations and water wherever they could be found, the group encountered the Dutch Resistance and were given shelter until, so it seems, they were evacuated to the Allies lines during Operation Pegasus. The captured SS man was not so fortunate, however. Judged to be a traitor by the Resistance, he was put on trial, forced to dig his own grave, and executed. Copyright: Fred Pimperton.
