During the action at Arnhem. Wherever the shelling and mortaring was heaviest, Private Slater went immediately to render first aid to the wounded. He went all over the battlefield and always working under the most dangerous conditions he saved many lives. On one occasion when his officer was badly wounded and everybody was driven to their trenches, Private Slater alone crawled forward and rendered first aid. At all times during the battle he was to be found where the shelling was worst. His skill and bravery became a byword among the men of his sector.
