To be Mentioned In Despatches is to have participated in some noteworthy action, but not one of sufficient calibre to justify a medal, though after the First World War it was decided that a physical indication of this merit be made in the form of a bronze oak leaf. This is the lowest form of award, and it may be bestowed upon all ranks.
