Similar to the Distinguished Flying Cross in that it may only be awarded for an act of exceptional valour, courage, or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy, the Distinguished Flying Medal was awarded to NCO's and other ranks. The medal features the head of the reigning Monarch with an effigy of Athena Nike on the reverse, bearing a Hawk with spread wings, and the words "For Courage". The medal is hung from a white ribbon with purple diagonal stripes.
